We’re thrilled to present to you our next maker of the month, Casey Richardson, the person behind the pottery of Swoon Ceramics. As a fellow creative, Casey channels her simplistic style, detail-oriented nature, and design inspiration into all of her handcrafted, ceramic pieces. Whether she’s on or off the potter’s wheel, Casey truly embodies the essence of patience, precision, and most of all, passion.
Q: Tell us about your business!
A: "Made of Earth is slowly made, functional pottery vessels made to fit into anyone’s aesthetic. I stick to neutral / earth tones so that each piece can be brought to life by the customer and how they decide to style it."
Q: What inspired you to start making?
A: "I took a class on hand-building in college, when I saw people on the wheel I knew I wanted to try it. I fell in love with the quietness of the medium right away."
Q: Walk us through your creative process...
A: "It changes all the time. Sometimes, I take a more calculated approach and plan out different collections to put out. But recently I’ve been going into the studio with no plan, and make whatever I want. I have notebooks full of color schemes, sketches, and watercolor paintings to look back on if I ever feel that I’m in a creative blockage. Mostly though, I make whatever feels good. If I end up loving it, I’ll make multiples of that form and create a new collection for my website."
Q: What would you say makes your business special?
A: "Similar to a lot of artists, it’s made by only me from start to finish. Everything is made with so much intention and care."
Q: What do you see for the future of your business?
A: "Definitely expanding and working with other local businesses. Opening a small shop hopefully. Actually! Keep an eye out for something coming soon with a local company ;)"
